Welcome to the Tea and Scone Hop, where you can follow my travels with my college roommate, Dorene, on our quest for tea, scones, and other pleasures associated with the British tradition of afternoon tea.

While Dorene has a lifelong passion for tea and scones, I consider myself a novice tea drinker being initiated into the world of afternoon tea.  This blog includes both Dorene’s expert analysis of each experience as well as my observations, inquiries, and musings on this novelty.

Each destination on the Tea and Scone Hop has its own story, so I also write about history, travel, and anything else related to our quest for tea and scones.

Destinations include:

  • England
  • Dorene’s home state of Connecticut
  • My home – Boston
  • Any place else where we encounter tea and scones

Occasionally, I leave the tea and scones to Dorene and indulge in other treats.  Yet I never feel left out of the delights of afternoon tea, proving that there is truth to the opening lines of Henry James’s novel The Portrait of a Lady:

Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.  There are circumstances in which, whether you partake of the tea or not–some people of course never do–the situation is in itself delightful.
